My family got scammed?PLEASE HELP!!?

We got a call and these people said that they were working with this well known company for this promotional thing and they would get us with dental insurance if we paid them $200 and we gave them all our info including our social security #. My sister called the office that they said we would be going to in our town and they have no record of us. The number that the people called from does not work. I have no idea what to do I am scared that they will financially mess us up because they have our SS#'s. What should I do? How do you start the process of changing a social security number?

thank you

Oh oh, I am so sorry.

I hope you realize you are out of that money? You need to contact your local police and report this.

You also need to immediately contact any business/company that has anything to do with that information. You handed them the info they need to steal your identity. You will need to watch carefully for a long time, any accounts, bank, credit card, etc., for any purchases, added accounts, or changes to your accounts. If they have your credit card information, call that company and cancel the card, getting a new one with a different number. Also bank information, if they have that info. Get your credit reports and watch them carefully.

I do not think you can change Social Security numbers. But, I guess, it can not hurt to ask.

And you should never, ever give out personal information to any one for any reason, whether by

E-mail, snail mail, phone call, or at your front door. If there is something you are interested in and want more information, you call or contact them back, looking up the number or address yourself, never using the information that they give you, as it is almost always a fake.
Yes, never give out info to strangers over the phone. You've no idea who they really are.

You should:

File a police report.

Contact your social security office and tell them what happened.

Issue fraud alerts on your credit accounts.
