When can I get US Social Security Number if my immigration status is this...?

1. I arrived in the US last Oct. 18,2008 in a K1/ fiancee visa

2. I married my American fiance on Nov. 7,2008

3. My I-94 expired last Jan. 17,2009 so my application for US social security number was denied last Jan. 25,2009.

4. I just mailed my I-485 or application for change of status to USCIS

..............but my American husband will file his 2008 Income Tax Return next week and he needs my SSN to have a tax refund being married in his status. Is there a possibility that I can have my SSN soon?

Advise me, please. Thank you!

How much time|||Did you apply for EAD as well? You should get your EAD within the 3 months after filing AOS/EAD. With that card you should be able to get a SSC.

Does he have to file his taxes next week? He has time till April so you should get your EAD before the tax due date.|||While your petition is pending, you can get an IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) so he can file married filing jointly.|||Go to the IRS and get a w-7 Immigrant tax #. They hand them out like hotcakes|||You will be able to get a SSN 90 days after the petition (i-485) was filed, when your work permit arrives (that is if you filed for a work permit too).|||File a form w-7 for an ITIN number.|||You can apply for a tax payer id, so your husband can claim you as a dependent.

My bank messed up on my Social Security Number, how would this affect me?

My bank is not a big bank like bank of america, its only local. My problem is, is that when I gave them 2 pieces of identification, I gave them my military ID and my state id. When they were getting down my Social Security number from my military ID, they took my dad%26#039;s instead of mine and so now the account is under my name but also under my dad%26#039;s social security number. We also have the same name which is confusing to lots of people. I got a debit card from them but I%26#039;m afraid if I activate it, I%26#039;ll be charged for identity theft. Its been 2 months since I noticed this problem but I%26#039;m so busy that I never have time to change the problem. How would this affect me in any way?|||Write them a very simple letter right to the point explaining the situation.

Take a copy of it and send it to them via registered post.

If you feel a bit mean for their mistake, take 15 copies and mail one each day to them, for two weeks on the row. I am sure that will drive the point home.

In the meantime get your dad to activate the card and just use it.

My girlfriend acts like she OWNS my credit card and there%26#039;s no sign of ID theft on the horizon.

I mean, this is your dad. It takes him to report and push an id theft before someone starts to take it seriously and even then it might take them 6 months or more before anything is done, if ever.|||Well, you better get time and fix the problem. The time you spent typing this in and waiting for responses you could have been on the phone with them figuring out what to do.|||I agree with Thunder. This is an easy fix unless there is more to your story. I can tell that you are young and not truly concerned. It will affect you and mosts importantely your dad if you don%26#039;t balance your check book properly....|||%26quot;I never have time to change the problem.%26quot; Baloney. Get it correct ASAP.|||Three options:

1. Close the account and reopen another one with the proper information.

2. Get this account fixed with only your information.

3. Make it a joint account with your dad and have both names and both social security numbers.

If you don%26#039;t get it fixed the transactions on the account will be reported to the IRS under your dad%26#039;s ssn, and if a large amount of interest is paid, he will owe taxes on the interest. If you overdraft the account or run into problems with it, it will show up as a negative entry on his credit report. If you lose your ID and need to get into the funds on the account based on your social security number you will not be able to do so - because the bank records say it is your father%26#039;s account.

Help! I already submitted my common app to 3 schools, but forgot to put in my social security number...?

I am applying for financial aid and this is necessary. How can I change this?|||Write to each school and ask them to include your social security number which you have enclose in the above letter./

Can I put my married name on the birth certificate if it isn't legally changed with social security??

I got married in Sept 06.. and my became pregnant in Nov 07. We are expecting our son in 6 weeks and I%26#039;m having an issue where I meant to change my name with social security to my married name.. waiting till the last minute.. and my husband lost my passport which I need to get it done. Is a marriage license enough to get my name on the birth certificate under my married name?? Our insurance has me under my maiden name because it has to match my social security number. I%26#039;m not sure how the birth certificate works. I hope to find the passport and somehow get it done in time.. but I can%26#039;t find it anywhere. Anyone?|||you are supposed to put your maiden name on a birth certificate either way....they didn%26#039;t even ask for my married name, only maiden!|||I know in my state the married name of the mother does Not go on the birth certificate. It%26#039;s the mother%26#039;s maiden name that is used!

You are married by the decree of the marriage license whether you change your last name or not on any %26quot;official%26quot; documents.

Has anyone gotten a new Social security number? if so how did you do it?

someone keeps calling my house saying i slept with his wife, and putting letters in my mail box. I was thinking i need to change my SSN and move. Has anyone ever changed there SSN name and if so, how did they do it?|||If you join the witness protection program.|||The odds of your story being true seem slim to me. I don%26#039;t know why you really need a new SSN, but even if I knew how to help you I wouldn%26#039;t.|||You can%26#039;t.

Someone calling your house doesn%26#039;t necessarily have your SSN.|||You can not change your SS#.They give it to you when you are born and write it on your death certificate when you die.Fin|||I am not sure what changing your SSN has to do with the situation you are describing. Seems the simplest way to solve the calls would be to change your phone number and get it unlisted or get a prepaid cell and turn landline off.

As far as the letters in the mailbox...unless the person is in your household or is the mail carrier, (who is employed by the Federal Government), uhhh, isn%26#039;t it a Federal offense to be messing with your mailbox anyway?

I really don%26#039;t think it is wise or that you have a legitimate cause to go messing around with your SSN based on the circumstances given.

Have you left out any information here?

My ex husband is using my social security number and applying for credit or joint bank accounts.?

We have been divorced for 3 years, he has claimed me as a dependant on his taxes and most recently I found out he has gone online and opened a joint bank account (thanks bank of america for your stringent security measures!) with me as a co signer. He also has applied for joint credit with several companies. Every time he does this it marks my credit rating when my report gets run. How do I stop it? One person told me to change my SS number. How hard is that? How long does it take?

PS

I have a restraining order against my ex, so Im not going to call him and tell him to stop, like he actually would.|||contact you states attorney on this matter for theft on your ss# and call that bank and ask them what they are doing opening this stuff without you signing any papers and if so tel them you want to see the papers signed|||Call the Police. And do it NOW! Then call your Lawyer!

good luck!|||What he said. Call the police.|||For every fraudulent account you find, immediately call and mail the bank or credit company and explain that this is an unauthorized account.

Also contact the credit bureau with the same information.

AND call the police, this is credit fraud.|||Definitely call the police and put a fraud alert on your credit file.

If your state allows freezing your credit, do it. No one will be able to access your credit.|||Identity and credit fraud. Do it ASAP, he could REALLY damage your credit and identity and it will take forever to remedy. Go to your local ss office and tell them what%26#039;s going on and ask about the possibility of getting a new number. It will be a hassle, but it might make it easier to catch him and prove that he%26#039;s using your %26quot;old%26quot; number.|||Call all three credit bureaus and have fraud alerts put on your account.....Sign up with Equifax credit monitoring ($9.99 month) so you will be alerted immediately of further accounts opened under your name....

Contact the IRS and notify them that you were placed as a dependent on his tax return in error.|||Lawyer, Police, Identity Fraud, and the companies were the credit was opened!!!!!! Call them!!!!! Notify them!!!!!|||He shouldn%26#039;t be doing that if you are officially divorced unless it says otherwize in the divorce settlement what you can have and what you can%26#039;t have. I don%26#039;t think he has any legal means to do that. You can go to jail for stuff like that for 3 years and up to 10 in some states.|||Call the police. File a police report. Your ex-husband is commiting fraud.|||Call the police. Be on notice though, he will probably be going away to jail for this.

Credit card company used the wrong social security number.?

I applied for a credit card at a local electronics store and everything thing was 100% correct on the application that I filled out. Well after getting what I wanted and getting home I tried to set up my card over the phone. I entered my social and come to find out the company has my SSN off by one digit some how. They told me I had to do all of these papers to change my social and I told them that it was their problem and they should just fix it. Well they can%26#039;t without me doing those papers. What should I do? Pay the bill and give someone else a good credit review to up their score? Should I do all the stupid papers and fax them? Should I just go get a new card under the right social and say to heck with this card and leave the balance unpaid? Could I get into trouble for their foul up?|||They have your name and address. If you don%26#039;t help them correct their screw-up, they can probably attach your checking account (via court order).

I%26#039;m sure they can make the correction, they just don%26#039;t know how. If your paperwork is correct, then you%26#039;ve done your part. Filling out paperwork with the EXACT same information isn%26#039;t going to correct their problem. However, if your paperwork has errors on it, then you are obligated to make corrections.|||Duh... yes you should %26quot;do all the stupid papers.%26quot;

SSN Social Security Number Questions?

What can be done if someone steals your social security number or card? What if you are under 18, what can be done with it?

Why is it so important?

How soon can you get it changed? Can it be changed if you are under 18?

Is it safe to sign up for a bank account online typing your social security number in?

Please tell all about SSN.|||Use credit reporting agencies to stop anyone trying to use that number to establish a credit line or card.

It is very difficult to get a new SSN.

Better question: what is the relevance of the number on the back of the SS card?......

The government owns you.|||Go to the Social Security agency in your area with a State issued photo I.D., A state issue Birth Certificate, any other proof of identification (including your parents if you are under 18) and take it from there. They will handle from there. Also, red flag all (with a lawyer if needed) transactions with ALL credit agencies.

If this person is caught. Prosecute them with the full extent of the law, and sue them for all the money you can. It%26#039;s not cheap rebuilding your own name.

If you are fishing here for breaking the law, and trying to abuse someone?

I hope Bubba or Butch does bad BAD things to your backside...

Family member stealing social security number. What are the options?

I have a friend who%26#039;s mother is an alcoholic and recently found out that her mother used her social security number to setup a utility account. Her mother didn%26#039;t pay the bill and now creditors are calling my friend saying she owes $600. Obviously she doesn%26#039;t want to pay the money but also doesn%26#039;t want to press charges on her ill mother. What options does she have now and how can she protect herself in the future? Does she need to change her SSN (which I hear is a terrible process)? Thanks!!|||Your friend should look into Zander Identity Theft Insurance. It is the only one that I know of that covers identity theft by a family member. Changing a SSN is very difficult. She could put a freeze on her credit reports. I hate to say it but putting a fraud charge on may be her only way out. It may also scare her mother enough so that she might stop drinking. Pressing charges may sound terrible in the short run but it could be better for Mom in the long run.|||If the party refuses to press charges, then there is nothing can be done. You can not change a SSN. She can put the account on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus. It has to be renewed every 90 days.|||Actually she need to place fraud alert on all three credit bureaus. Here is the information:

A fraud alert is a credit freeze. Anytime a company (utilities, cell phone etc) want to grant credit to the SSN, they will have to speak with her first. For more information about protecting her identify, go to http://www.fightidentitytheft.com/flag.h鈥?/a>

She should also check out her credit reports, in case there are credit accounts opened in her name.

Best wishes.

How to report at the social security my benefits from the itin number?

i have since 2000 itin number to pay my taxes but this year i get my resident alien and my social security how to report to the social security office this change thanks|||You were not legally allowed to work in this country so don%26#039;t get any social security benefits from income you got before becoming eligible for a social security card.

How is it possible for the Social Security office to change your date of birth?

How could this happen?!? While trying to e-file my taxes I found that the IRS not once, but twice rejected the e-file because it said that my date of birth didn%26#039;t correspond with my social security number and was then refereed to the IRS hot line. After calling the IRS, I find that somehow the social security office has changed my date of birth to exactly one month earlier... how is this even possible? So... going by what the IRS representative told me, now my birthday is one month earlier than it has been for the past 20 years. Last year when I filed, so was not the case, therefor over the coarse of the year somehow my date of birth has been changed by the social security office has changed it. How is this even possible? All of the sudden I was born a month earlier... what?|||it is possible because of special reasons.|||This happened to me also!

How do I change a spelling mistake in the last name of my social security card? I am NOT living in the US.?

Should I file for income tax using the stated name in my social security even if it%26#039;s wrong? If your social security card has been stolen but has not yet been misused, how do you change your number?

I looked on the www.ssa.gov site or social security webpage and it doesn%26#039;t answer questions about any cautious prevention after your card has been stolen. Changing one's Social Security Number?

How, exactly, would one go about changing one%26#039;s existing social security number? How can I file for child support without the father's social security number?

I had a short relationship with a man and I became pregnant. Now, he denies paternity and I am trying to file for child support in Texas. I filed with his address, phone number, work address, date of birth, and I was contacted by the state and told that my case was closed due to lack of information on the father, they said they needed his social security number. Of course, he won%26#039;t give it to me, cause he does not want to have to pay. What can I do? Should I contact a lawyer, or will they need his social also? Also, he has moved once and changed phone numbers twice trying to avoid me. Can%26#039;t they get his social form his work? Thanks for the answers, and if you say something stupid I will report you.|||WHAT ???? !!!! thats not true (it cant be), you dont HAVE to have the SS to drag him into court. if that were true, you%26#039;d need the SS of people who assault you too... to file against them.

how do they EXPECT a potential father to willingly GIVE IT TO A PREGGERS GF????

i would write your states Attorney General, your states Governor and your states Regional FEDERAL Child Support Office.

tell them about this, exactly what you said here. keep it short. its more effective that way. ask them what i asked too... and ask them how this is possible? ask why he is not forced to come to court and give that info himself. ask how any mother is supposed to get that info willingly. ask what they can do about it.

one more thing, FAX that ONE letter to all of them. phone calls are useless, mail ends up in a pile, but FAXES are effective. if you hear nothing, fax it again. fax it weekly if need be. the squeaky wheel gets the oil, dont forget that.

when you click on your states Regional FEDERAL Child Support Office, you will see the fax number on the right hand side. if ever you cant find a fax number (most are listed online), just call and ask for it.

Is it possible to remove your parents names from your Social Security Number?

I am 22, but I was not born in the USA, so I dont have a birth certificate issued in the USA. I am a resident but not a citizen. I know that when applying for a social security number, on the forms there are sections where you provide the names of the parents. I got my SSN issued in 2001.

How can this information be changed or removed? I know that, traditionally, you are tied to your parents names via your birth certificate. But are you also tied to them via information in your social security number?|||You cannot have the names of your parents removed from your Social Security enumeration record.|||Well I guess since you are not a citizen of the USA they needed to know who your parents were in case something happened to you...I don%26#039;t know any more.|||I don%26#039;t think your parents have anything to do with your s.s. number.

My father knows my social security number and the rest of my personal information, so how can I prevent him...?

...from doing parasitic things with it since we are deadly enemies? Social security change? What if he goes to the bank and says %26quot;I am the father of (my name), give me his debit account number%26quot;, will the bank disclose it freely if he knows my social security/birth date/ and has certificate of birth/ and other things??? Can I notify the government to make sure that my father is kept under close watch??|||If you%26#039;re a minor, he has parental rights over you, and is able to do such things. You will have to have his parental rights terminated, and this is usually done in conjunction with getting someone else appointed as your legal guardian.

If you%26#039;re a legal adult, then he can%26#039;t do this. Seriously, he can%26#039;t legally do this. The bank would be in a world of trouble if they gave out account numbers. Social Security Card number changed?

After you get married, is there a time frame to how long you have to change the name and number of your social security card?|||i didnt change mine till four years after we were married, unfortunately, we only stayed married for one more year, so anyway, i dont think there is a time frame|||Your number doesn%26#039;t change. If you decide to take your husband%26#039;s name that is all that changes after you take your marriage certificate to the SS office. I don%26#039;t think there is a time frame involved.|||I don%26#039;t think your number changes, just your name. And there is a time frame. Here%26#039;s a site that should help:

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.鈥?/a>|||no number change or time frame.|||The name change should take place within thrity days, the number will never change.|||I believe your number stays the same, you only change your name.

And changing your name is actually optional.|||I don%26#039;t think there is a time limit. Most places have an 800# listed in the phone book. Just make sure you do it before you start getting your paycheck in your new name.|||theres no specific time frame. however the sooner you get it done the better incase you need it for say... to get your drivers license renewed or a new job for ID. other than that you should be good for a while.|||I do not know about a time frame, but your number does not change. Only the name on the card.|||Your social security number never changes.

You should change the name on it right away, if you are changing your name after marriage. If the name on the social security card doesn%26#039;t match your payroll records, it can screw up your social security benefits. Also, many DMV offices will not issue a new ID or driver%26#039;s license in your new married name unless you have your new SS card with the new name. You can get the form off the web on ssa.gov. You can go in person to the local SSA office or do it by mail. (I mailed them my application for a new SS card with an original marriage certificate, and enclosed a self-addressed stamped envelope for them to send back the marriage certificate. New card came in about a week.)

How to keep my name/social security number from being searched on the internet? i would like to change my las?

i would like to change my last name but i do not want to come up in the search engine. is there a way i can try to keep it from coming up when i cange my name?|||Anything like that is a matter of public record (the last name and change, not the SSN).|||If your name is in a phonebook, it is on the internet.|||When you find out, would you please e-mail me? I lost my wallet with my social security card and drivers license?

Will someone be able to steal my ss number and get loans or something out under my name? How can I prevent it? also am I able to change my social security number as I am paranoid right now|||All you can do is keep track of your credit score and activity and if you see something you didn%26#039;t know about you call and report it as fraud. Report lost drivers license to DMV. You cannot change your SSN. You should not carry your ss card with you except when taking it to someplace like a new job. It isn%26#039;%26#039;t legal id for anything since it doesn%26#039;t have birth date or picture on it.|||It is very difficult to change an SSI number. Almost impossible. There is not much you can do. You can contact the credit burros and have an alert put on your report that will last 90 days or so.|||I had this problem only my wallet was actually stolen from my house. I went to the Social Security office to change my Social Security number, which you can change a set number of times IN A LIFETIME, and they told me that unless there was actual fraudulent activity concerning my social security number they wouldn%26#039;t change my social security number. So you%26#039;ll have to have documented fraudulent activity to get you SS# changed to a different one. I believe that you can do the same thing for your DL. The only time the SSA even considers giving someone a new number is if they have been the victim of identity theft; and only as a last resort after all other options have been exhausted.|||Maybe they have changed their name? Or perhaps they were adopted? im really not sure- possible witness protection act?

Do I do that before or after I get married, and how long does it take? Where do I do it? How long till it takes effect? Also, what about my drivers license?|||You do it after you get married.

It is fairly simple, just go to the social security office with your marriage documents. They change the name and mail you a new card, you usually get it in 2-4 weeks. Same thing with the drivers license, except you get that right away.

This is a link to the Social Security web site. On the page it says that a person can get a new social security number in %26quot;certain circumstances%26quot;.

I would suggest you call the Social Security administration (the site provides contact info) and explain the situation. They may give your kids a new number since what has happened is basically identity theft.

My best advice to you would be to call the companies that your ex used the kids names and numbers to make accounts with and explain to them the situation. If you have proof that this was done fradulently, they may be able to help you. I would suggest getting any documentaion you can proving that your ex has been doing what you say he has been doing. The first place to start would be to make a police report if you can.

I would also contact the IRS and make sure they know that your ex claimed the kids when he shouldn%26#039;t have. As far as I know, if two people claim the same kids as dependants, the IRS is supposed to request proof of who the children lived with and who supported them. The person who actually supported the kids gets to claim them. The exceptions are if he didn%26#039;t claim them as dependants, but claimed his support only or if he lived with and supported them for 6 months of the year.|||i really dont think you can do that it is an identification number used by the government to keep track of people all i beleive you can do is change their name and if he tries something that again the number wont match the name on file and it wont happen fraudulant charges again|||each person has their own SS number, it stays with you throughout your life and working life. You can%26#039;t change the number for that person, you can%26#039;t get an additional one, however if you had your name changed in court you can change the name on it...but what good would changing your name do since he still has the SS numbers . I suggest you solve the problem thru an attorney.|||There is no way to get those numbers changed but you can report your ex for claiming the kids on his taxes when he knows that it was wrong to do so. You can%26#039;t change SS numbers, but you can also talk to Social Security and see if they offer you any other suggestions to see to it that he doesn%26#039;t use their numbers in the future for taxes or anything else. Call the SS Office first, then call the IRS and report him, then move and change your phone number like you were saying. You know you don%26#039;t have to have your number listed, don%26#039;t you? And if you choose to have it listed anyway, don%26#039;t use your name for the listing in the book, just use your initials with your last name. That way it sounds like the number might be for a man and could get it overlooked if someone were trying to get the number. I don%26#039;t know of any websites except for the government listing for Social Security that might help. I%26#039;m sort of new at all this computer stuff, but I wanted to try and help you anyway. That man sounds like such a scoundrel! Best of luck to you and your kids!|||It can be changed. Some people who have had their numbers used by hundreds of illegal aliens were granted new numbers. You have to go to the Social Security Service office and start the review process to see if your case has merit. It%26#039;s not done often.|||Go to the local Social Security Office in your area and tell them about your concerns. I%26#039;m sure they can do something. My phone bill is in my name but has a different social security number. is it still building my credit?

i am trying to change the social security number to my own. i dont know how the mix up occured.|||Paying your phone bill on time will never help improve your credit. The only reason why people say this is important is if you DON%26#039;T pay your phone bill and they send it to collections, THEN it goes on your credit reports. But they don%26#039;t report your good behavior- doesn%26#039;t that suck!!|||I don%26#039;t think a phone bill has anything to do with building your credit. They will report you if you don%26#039;t pay, but utilities do not make regular reports to a credit bureau.

Sorry. You have to get CREDI to build credit. That means someone gives you something of value and gets paid later.|||no, you better get it fixed

I have been a victim of identity theft & need a new social security number. How can I solicit one?

My phone plan was tampered with, my mail was forwarded to a residence that is not mine, and I%26#039;m afraid it will get worse from here. I told the police what happened and I told Victims Services also. But no one will give me leads as to how to proceed with changing my social security number. Does anyone out there have any advice for me?|||If you are being disadvantaged by someone using your number such as incorrectly arrested, denied credit etc., you can get SS to issue you a new number. It is a lot of trouble for you when your number is changed because so many places have record of you based on that number. Sometimes it is more of a disadvantage to getting a new number.

You will need to go into the Social Security with proof that you are being disadvantaged. The process is similar to when you get your number for the first time. You must be interviewed if you are over age 12, submit proof of birth, proof of citizenship or lawful status and proof of your identity.

How long should I wait to change my social security number?

Two days ago an identity thief used my social security number as well as the rest of my personal information to attempt to wire all the money out of my savings account. They didn%26#039;t get my money and don%26#039;t seem to have given me any bad credit (since I shouldn%26#039;t have ANY right now), but they still have my social security number and all my personal information, including my signature. I%26#039;ll probably have to change my ssn, but should I wait for more fraudulant activity with my information after I put a fraud alert on my number, or should I go ASAP to get my ssn changed?|||Let%26#039;s look at it another way. If your car was stolen, would you wait to see if the perpetrators come back for something else before reporting it to the police?

Losing your identify is much worse than the car. With your SSN and personal information, they can sign up for credit cards or loans that you will be responsible for. Depending on who it was that stole your social, they can use it for employment using your name.

People who have an established credit history can spend 10 years trying to restore their credit after an identify theft. If you don%26#039;t have any credit, it will be that much more difficult in the future once it has been compromised.

My suggestion would be to register a fraud alert with the credit bureaus. With the alert in place, a potential creditor is to verify your identity prior to issuing credit. If however, the perpetrators have enough information to create a fake ID, then the alert will not have its full weight.

Theoretically, if you issue a fraud alert with one of the bureaus, the information would be shared with the other bureaus. For your protection, I would suggest contacting all three.

That way no one can establish credit in your name without calling the phone number you give the credit reporting agencies. I believe that once you call one they%26#039;ll share the fraud alert with the others.

Now, regarding your SSN. You won%26#039;t be able to change it. They don%26#039;t change them for this type of problem. Think about it, wouldn%26#039;t this be a great way to wipe the credit score slate clean if you could claim this type of attempted fraud and just get a new ssn?

How Can I change my son's social security number?

My 15 year old son is a victim of identity theft. I tried calling experian and equifax but they don%26#039;t deal with Minors Only Trans union deals with minors and there no help either. I faxed in his birth certificate and social security card like a week ago and they still haven%26#039;t got it. and even if i clear things up with them, I still need to clear things up with the other credit bureaus. Plus I%26#039;m not sure if there are any current accounts open in his name so they could report to his credit anytime. And then I have to keep doing this. I contacted the police and made a police report because I believe it is my ex husband doing this but I don%26#039;t have any proof or a bill with his name on it to press charges. This has been going on since 2005. I just found out that a bank just reported to his credit report. I can%26#039;t really access his credit report because he is a minor. What should i do? I really want to clear this up but it%26#039;s so stressful because nobody is helping me. I feel like crying because I am a mother and I can%26#039;t do anything. I just want to change his Social security number. Can i do that? What number should i call? I called the social security department and their wait time is like 1 hour. The office is located in Sacramento and I live in San diego. I don%26#039;t know what to do. I don%26#039;t want him to have bad credit when he hasn%26#039;t even had a chance to use it.|||I%26#039;m in your son%26#039;s EXACT SAME shoes!!! Sadly enough, my identity was stolen when I was 15 due to some stupid mistakes on my mother%26#039;s part.

From what I understand, you cannot change your son%26#039;s SSN until you take the folks who abused his credit to court, fix everything, and then his identity is stolen AGAIN. I kid you not. There must be evidence that his number is being repeatedly abused, and AFTER you have taken these guys to court, in order for you to get a new # for him

This is the info that I got directly from the social security administration. Like I said, I am in your son%26#039;s shoes, and due to the fault of my own mother (just as your son is with his father). :(

How much does it cost to change your social security number in massachusetts?

Only the social security dept can change your number it is a valid reason, such as a duplication accident on their part, problems with the number having been used by an illegal or otherwise. The procedure is long and they will not always do it.

Should you get a new Social Security number?

If you have done all you can to fix the problems resulting from misuse of your Social Security number and someone still is using your number, we may assign you a new number.

You cannot get a new Social Security number:

* To avoid the consequences of filing for bankruptcy;

* If you intend to avoid the law or your legal responsibility; or

* If your Social Security card is lost or stolen, but there is no evidence that someone is using your number.

If you decide to apply for a new num颅ber, you will need to prove your age, U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status and identity. For more information, ask for Your Social Security Number And Card (Publication Number 05-10002). You also will need to provide evidence that you still are being disadvantaged by the misuse|||You can%26#039;t change your Social Security Number.

The one you get stays with you for life.

Can I have my social security number changed due to identity theft?

I have found out that my social security card number is being used by an EX relation. Credit cards are repeatedly issued in my name, and I have closed countless accounts over the years, but new cards keep getting issued in this person%26#039;s name with my social security number.

If I have documented proof of identity theft, would the Social Security Administration accept this as a valid reason to have my social security number changed? My credit is ruined because of this person.

If there is no way to get a new social security number, how can I ever restore my credit?|||yes.

If you have done all you can to fix the problems resulting from misuse of your Social Security number and someone still is using your number, we may assign you a new number.

Keep in mind that a new number probably will not solve all your problems. This is because other governmental agencies (such as the Internal Revenue Service and state motor vehicle agencies) and private businesses (such as banks and credit reporting companies) likely will have records under your old number. Also, because credit reporting companies use the number, along with other personal information, to identify your credit record, using a new number will not guarantee you a fresh start. This is especially true if your other personal information, such as your name and address, remains the same.

If you receive a new Social Security number, you will not be able use the old number anymore.

For some victims of identity theft, a new number actually creates new problems. If the old credit information is not associated with the new number, the absence of any credit history under the new number may make it more difficult for you to get credit.|||Go to your Social Security office with your evidence.|||Yea you can just go apply for a social security just call the IRS and ask them what you should do. My aunt went through the same thing. They will actually flag your account for Identity Theft. Hope this can help you with your situation|||First of all call up the credit bearu and put a fraud alert on your account. With this any time someone opens up a account in your name the credit bearu will have to get permission through you, otherwise the account cant be open.

I think that SSA should be able to change your number, I dont see why not.

With respect to restoring your credit, it can be time consuming, but you will have to work with the credit rating agency. Pull up your credit report (by federal law you can get one free at annualcreditreport.com). anything that is not your, dispute it with the agency.

you might also want to consider filling charges against the person and possibly suing them.

Good luck with everything!|||It%26#039;s tempting, but you wouldn%26#039;t want to do that. Think how backwards the SS system is, now think that they will handle things cleanly so that when you are ready to retire you will be able to collect your benefits.

If you are getting exhausted trying to deal with this situation now, think how wiped out you will be at 75 when you are trying to convince the SS dept. that you are one and the same as that %26quot;number%26quot; that paid into the administration out of his or her paychecks for so many years.

Solution: call the 3 major credit unions and put a flag on your number. This way, any time someone wants to open an account using your credit, there is a flag that says NO. You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report. Check it out and see what accounts are open, then call each creditor and cancel the account.

You might have to check your credit report every year to make sure the flags are still in place and that nothing has slipped through, but it%26#039;s worth it!

Good luck.|||have your evidence ready %26amp; have it notarized by a lawyer specifying your letter to request another SSN due to identity theft just be sure you have proof that you tried to patch things out to make it valid.. They%26#039;d would help you|||Get the person arrested, charged and jailed that stole your number.

As well as getting the fraud alert on your credit report.

If you can prove that these cards and all were taken out by someone other than you, the agencies have to take them off your record which will improve your credit report back to the way it was.

How do you change your social security number from your married name to your maiden name?

I took my husbands name and changed my ss number. We are still married, but I would like to use my maiden name again. What do I need to do to change my ss number again?|||A court order. It%26#039;s not as easy going back to the maiden name.|||Divorce him and present your divorce papers to the SS office and point out the part where it says you were given your maiden name back.|||Go to the Social Security Office in your area, take your birth cert, and your marriage license.

Change Social Security Number while Enlisted in the Military?

Yeah Apparently I lost my Social Security Card (Well, my whole wallet apparently)

And I went to the Social Security Office today and got a verification of social security so I can get on base but Im still worried about the person who obtained my Social Security Card along with my ID and CAC Card.

How can I prevent Identity theft?

I heard that the fraud prevention can freeze your credit reports but can screw me over later on when I want to purchase a car or somethin.

What should I do to prevent Identity theft or that person from opening false bank accounts and so forth!?!

Should I change my Social Security Number or something? idk :(

Im currently Enlisted in the United States Air force Reserve|||Step one: Contact each of the three credit reporting bureaus and ask for a credit freeze. Their phone number for credit freezes can be found via google (Experian, Transamerica, and forget the 3rd). I had to do this for a different reason - my cost was $15 for each bureau. Gotta do all three since it only takes one to grant credit. If you are concerned, DO NOT delay! To lift the freeze, you can do it temporarily for a specific timeframe or permanently - another $15. Good side - no one can open any credit using your SSN since all credit agencies to include car dealers will check your credit rating and will find that your credit report is frozen - they cannot see it until you temporarily or permanently release the freeze.

IF you do in fact become a victim of ID theft, report it to the police. Get a copy of the report. The credit bureaus do not charge you if you have a police report. You can also take the report to the Social Security Office and request issuance of a new number. They will be hestiant to do this, but others have successfully done so after the SS Office has determined the extent of the ID theft. Of course, this creates new problems for you. You will have no credit rating since your current rating is based on your current SSN. You will have to work with the Credit Bureaus to sync the numbers - hard task fraught with more problems. The military personnel and pay system as well as the IRS will have to be notified - you will need to followup to make sure everything is changed. You will need to check and make sure that each has linked your old SSN with the new. This is why the SS Admin is very reluctant to issue a new number. If you feel that it is necessary, take your police report and any evidence that others are using your SSN to the SS Office and request a new number. They will make the final determination.

Report loss of the CAC IMMEDIATELY to prevent any access by unauthorized persons to military computers. Hopefully, your passwords were not in your wallet. Also report loss of your ID card. For the military, you do not need a new SS card. They have that info in your units computer. They also know who your are. If you are a Reserve currently on active duty, all you needed to do is go to the gate and ask the guard to contact your unit. Someone from your unit would be dispatched to escort you to S-1 for issuance of a new CAC and ID card.

Lieutenant Colonel, USMC-Retired

You aren%26#039;t the 1st person for this to happen. It occurs in all the military services despite how hard you try to ensure it doesn%26#039;t. Thanks for serving.|||You can get a new card but not a new number.

How can i change my name and social security number in california in alameda county?

i want to change my social security number and my legal name how do i do this in the almeda county and is changing your social security number legal?|||You cannot change your social security number. Go to court to change your name.*|||what are you hiding from.|||Enter the witness protection program. Otherwise, you can only change your name. Social Security Number is stuck with you until you either die or renounce your citizenship and move to another country.

Is there a different way on, how you can change your social security number?

hey i recently moved out of my friends house, and i think i life an important document that has my information on it. do you think it%26#039;s a good idea to get a different social security number?|||There is no legal way to get a new social security number. If you are really concerned, you can have the three main credit bureaus put a contact you prior to approving any credit including loans.|||You can%26#039;t get a new SS number. Unless there are some really far fetched circumstances, the one you have is the one you%26#039;ll keep until you die.|||sure... contact your nearest illegal immigrant .. I%26#039;m sure they will be able to help you out !!|||The only way to changes a SS number is if you are in the witness protection program. They will change it for you along with new id.

When you get married are you supposed to change your social security number?

I%26#039;ve been married for 7 months now. I was told by the HR person at my job that I needed to change my name with Social Security in order to change my name at work (so that my checks display my married name). Is this true? How does this procedure work?|||You don%26#039;t change your SS number, just the name that%26#039;s attached to it. I bet you can do it online.

When you get married you can start using your husband%26#039;s name or a hyphenated name if you want. It%26#039;s really the only time that you can change your name without going to a lot of trouble with the court and everything.

If you keep your own last name, you don%26#039;t have to do anything.|||If you want to take your husband%26#039;s last name, yes, you need to inform Social Security. I got married about a year and a half ago. You have to go to the local social security office or you can do it through the mail. You need to show them your official legal marriage certificate and your old social security card and one other form of id like your driver%26#039;s license. The number does not change but they will mail you a new card with your new last name on it. You can use that new social security card to change your driver%26#039;s license, your passport, and any other legal document to your new married name.

If you didn%26#039;t change your last name, then you don%26#039;t need to do anything.|||You only get one social security number in a lifetime. You can get a form from the SS office and use your driving license and your marriage license to show you have gotten married. It is best to go in person to the social security office because they need originals not copies of this paperwork. Then your payroll office can make the official name change and start paying you using your new last name. You really never have to change your name unless you desire to do so.|||No.

IF you choose to take your new husbands name, you must change your name first with SS and then with every other agency you deal with. If you choose to keep your maiden name you don%26#039;t have to do anything.

You can go by any name you want, but you can legally only have one name. If you want your employer to issue cheques in your married name you have to change it to your married name for everything. Your employer can%26#039;t report your earnings under a different name than the one the government has for you.|||If you want to change your name you get a new card not a new number. If you don%26#039;t want to change your name you don%26#039;t. So yes if you want to change your name you have to take your marriage certificate down to the social security office and get a new card with your new name on it. The card will have a different name only, it will still be your same number.|||all ya do is apply for a new SS card with your new married name on it, but your SS # stays the same. You will receive a copy of your New SS # with your married name, within a couple of weeks you%26#039;ll receive your new SS card stating your married name.It%26#039;s true you do need to do this.|||Not your number, just the name on the card. You send in a simple form and copies of your id and marriage license. It is true and needs to be done before tax time, so you need to get to it.|||Oh yea you have to get a new SS card with your married name on it this is the same for your license and credit cards and all that stuff too. I%26#039;m not sure how to go about doing it because usually you do that when you get your marriage certificate.|||If choose to change your name for marriage you need to complete a form you can get online and take your marriage license and ID to the social security office.

http://www.ssa.gov/|||No,the one you have is yours for life.Social security needs to know that you got married so they can change there records to match your new last name.|||you go to the social security office in your town and they change your name on your card. Your number does NOT change. They send you the new one in the mail.|||HR is correct, why can%26#039;t you take their advise. Call Social Security Administration in Your area and ask what you need to do.|||YOur HR person is right. If you changed your name when you got married, you%26#039;ll need to file an application to change it in your info with SS.|||Yes, you must apply with Social Security to change your name on your social security card. You can do it on line.|||No you do not change the number you change the name on the card.|||You don%26#039;t change your social security number. Only the name on your account.|||You%26#039;ve got to be kidding me. Why not just call Social Security and ask them. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous.|||LOL I%26#039;ve been married for 18 years and never even thought about it.|||?????????????????????????????????|||you must change your NAME on the card...not the number|||NO%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;you don%26#039;t need to change your S S #. Just your name on the card.|||Nope. You don%26#039;t even have to change your last name unless you want to.|||Not the number just your name!

How can I change my Social Security number if somebody elso knows it?

Somebody called out my social security number and I don%26#039;t want to have bad credit because of them. I asked someone and they said I would have to be in the witness protection program but my life isn%26#039;t in danger just my credit and credit score. Please have a better solution.|||The Social Security Department will NOT just change your Social Security number because of this. If they did, then they would have to do it for everybody else. You will have to do whatever it takes to protect yourself from identity theft (because it has not happened to you) just call one of the 3 major credit bureaus %26amp; place a fraud alert on your credit (Experian, Equifax %26amp; TransUnion). That way, if anyone tries to open up an account or gain credit under your Social Security #, you can be notified first before any creditor grants it. Also, check your credit history every 3-4 months to make sure there are no unfamiliar accounts %26amp; that no one is posing as you in anyway having different accounts you don%26#039;t recognize. THAT%26#039;S ALL YOU CAN DO. Social Security Dept will only change your # UNLESS.... you have any of the following:

-Identity Theft has already taken place under your name %26amp; caused you major credit problems %26amp; you got proof that someone else is using your Social Security #

- You under the Witness Protection Program because your life is in danger. They will change your Social Security # to protect you.|||you can%26#039;t it is yours for LIFE...

Best thing to do is file a police report for ID theft.

Better safe then sorry....they can use your ID to get credit or job or almost anything in your name with it.

Report it..... NOW|||I would contact the social security administration and let them know what happened and that you would like to protect yourself from identity theft.|||There are reasons you can change your social security number. I David Small who was an attorney was barraged by the credit card industry because of his publication of legal ways to change your social security number. For example, if you were religious and had the number 666 in a row, that would be a valid reason. A court order is a valid reason, but a federal judge has to sign off on it. Small has information on this in a court case in south dakota. Email me at teenriodoll@hotmail.com and I will get the Small case for you.

Good Luck

How do you change your Social Security number?

I have a lawsuit with a company that got a laptop stolen with alot of peoples(including mine)information stolen. This included among other things our Social Security numbers.

I went to Social Security and brought my court documents and they said we need the final outcome AND you have to change your name.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Why if there is already proof our Social Security numbers are in a criminals possesion can%26#039;t we just get our Social Security numbers changed and what are some tips to help us with the process.|||Social Security will only issue new numbers if you have been disadvantaged by someone using your number. For example: incorrectly arrested or denied credit. Your number being in the hands of a criminal is not justification for being issued a new number.|||Only in very rare circumstances will the government change a SSN. What you should be doing is the normal precautions (credit record freezes, monitor your reports, etc.).|||You should also get a lawyer to help with the process, and to sue the company and or criminal. This isn%26#039;t a quick solve problem this kind of stuff takes years to correct. Getting a Identity Protection service is also a good idea.

How do I change my Social Security number?

My ex-wife has all my info and is steadily trying to get credit cards and hurt my credit, our divorce isn%26#039;t final yet. Is there a way to apply for a change of SSN?|||You can%26#039;t change your Social Security number. You can put yourself on credit alert. That way, anytime anybody tries to obtain credit (including yourself) they have to call you and verify it was you trying to get it before they grant it.|||Its impossible, the government has you.|||You can%26#039;t change your social security number. There may be a way to block things that she is doing though.

I am not sure about this but I heard that you can buy a new identity for about $20K. That would change your SSN.|||You need to request a credit freeze from all three bureaus. This will require creditors to contact you by phone before any lender can establish a new line of credit.|||you cant change your SSN unless you%26#039;re under the witness protection or something|||You can ASK the Social Security Administration. They WILL decline your request. Unless you prove someone is ACTIVELY using you SSN for fraud, they won%26#039;t even CONSIDER the request.

Note A credit freeze prevents anyone from accessing you credit report. It DOES NOT prevent someone from obtaining credit in your name. If the lender does not check your credit file, they will never know there is a credit freeze in place.|||Nope

Only thing you can do is put a freeze on your credit.

She wouldn%26#039;t be able to do anything at that point.

LifeLock offers such a service as do the credit bureaus.

Ask your divorce attorney about it.
